When readers pick up a romance novel, they want to escape into a world where love conquers all. However, for romance writers, creating an emotionally satisfying journey to happily ever after requires careful plotting, pacing, and a deep understanding of reader expectations. In this class, we will discuss the romance genre as a whole, including tropes, current trends, and misconceptions. Then, through discussions, writing prompts, and feedback sessions, you will learn how to create compelling characters, develop conflict, and draft the initial scenes of your own story through the lens of romance. We’ll also discuss topics like how to write spicy scenes (that aren’t cringy), avoiding “insta-love” cliches, and creating couples that readers root for.

This class is suitable for experienced writers new to the romance genre or dedicated romance readers looking to take the plunge into writing.
