Sentences are the building blocks of writing: they control, shape, and color our language. In this class, we will explore how our sentence structure shapes and creates meaning. We will look at a range of sentences—complex, compound, simple—from a host of different writers to broaden our understanding and discover new ways of stringing words together.

This class is for writers of all genres. Come prepared to write! We'll model, mimic, and play with the various forms we encounter to put our observations immediately into practice.

J. F. Ewert is a writer, writing coach, and lover of fine sentences. As a writing coach, he works under the moniker Work with Words, supporting writers as they launch their projects and carry them over the finish line. He’s the author of Blue Ice and Other Stories from the Rink, along with various personal essays and a weekly newsletter about embracing your writer’s block. Born and raised in Vancouver (the Canadian one), he now lives with his family just outside of Nashville, Tennessee. When he’s not working, he loves coaching youth baseball, singing in community choir, and sampling new hot sauces.
