You love to travel. You love to write. It should be easy to do them together, right? Well, yes…and no. Writing practical travel articles for magazines and guidebooks isn’t the same as sending a friend an email of your favorite restaurants from your last trip to Paris. This practical, hands-on workshop will provide actionable steps for those who want to write non-fiction travel journalism, rather than essays or travelogues. Travel writing experience is not necessary. Your active participation is!

In-Class Writing Lift: Light

Homework: None

Workshopping Drafts: Optional

Curiosity, journalism skills and luck have allowed Margaret to explore eclectic topics over her writing and editing career, ranging from how chefs can address gentrification to where to find the best doughnut. She's both an old-timer and a (relative) newcomer to Nashville, having moved back to her college town more than 17 years ago. She's the author of a number of travel guidebooks to the region, including Moon Nashville, Moon Memphis, Moon Tennessee, and Moon Nashville to New Orleans Road Trip, which includes the historic Natchez Trace Parkway.

She writes for Nashville Scene and its "Bites" food blog, National Geographic magazine, Condé Nast Traveler, Expedia, and many other publications. She particularly likes writing travel stories about easily accessible domestic destinations. When not traveling or writing, she's an avid paddleboarder, co-owns Nashville Paddle Company, and has paddleboarded in all 50 states.
