Whether you’re new to fiction writing or want to recharge your writing practice, this class will help you generate new work. Together we’ll take a close look at some of the building blocks of good prose fiction: character, setting, detail, point of view, voice, dialogue, and narrative structure. We’ll do close readings of published work by ink-slingers such as Mary Gaitskill, Kiese Laymon, Miranda July, Dan Chaon, and Amy Hemple, using them as craft models and inspiration. Weekly writing exercises and a workshop towards the second half will allow you to develop your own work in a supportive environment.
Trigger warning: Some readings may be edgy, violent, or over twenty years old, with occasionally offensive elements.
• In-Class Writing Lift: Heavy
