When readers pick up a romance novel, they want to escape into a world where love conquers all. However, for writers of romance, creating an emotionally satisfying journey to happily-ever-after requires careful plotting, pacing, and a deep understanding of reader expectations. In this class, we will discuss the romance genre as a whole, including tropes, current trends, and misconceptions. Then, through discussions, writing prompts, and the option to receive feedback on your own work in progress, you'll learn to create compelling characters, develop conflict, and draft your own story through the lens of romance. We’ll also discuss topics like how to write spicy scenes (that aren’t cringy), avoiding “insta-love” cliches, and paths to publication. This class is suitable for experienced writers new to the romance genre or dedicated romance readers looking to take the plunge into writing.
